Programs have been developed by Riverside ESC that respond to individual abilities and age-appropriate learning. Although the education program has evolved over several years, it retains the flexibility to incorporate new approaches and understanding, enabling a fresh approach to each and every enrolment.

Riverside Education Support Centre has selected three Priority Learning Areas to focus on within its educational and social development planning. These are:

• English - Reading
• Mathematics - Number
• Health, Safety and Well Being

Reading is one of the core learning areas at Riverside Education Support Centre, with a strong emphasis placed upon reading instruction throughout the school. Reading is vital for success in life and at our school every effort is made to incorporate this subject into all learning activities.

Maths (Number) was introduced as a priority learning area at the beginning of 2009; results thus far have shown a slow but steady improvement and justified this decision.  Utilising the revised First Steps Maths Scope and Sequence has assisted staff to focus on progressing individual students outcomes.

Heath, Safety and Well Being is presented to the students in three linked programs: Physical Education, Protective Behaviours, and Health

The imparting of Protective Behaviours skills is considered vital for preparing the student for the challenges of later life. Accordingly it has been designated a high focus or priority learning area. See more information here: Protective Behaviours (pdf file).

Community Access

Students are introduced to an array of skills needed for healthy and safe participation in the community outside school, such as shopping, pedestrian safety, using public transport, safe use of public conveniences, borrowing books from the library and asking for help. Riverside Education Support Centre covers all these learning activities and more as part of its individualised learning programs for Kindy through to Year 6. Students can replicate these tasks in a classroom setting but transference of skills from school to community receives a major investment in time, energy and resources.

The School Camp is one of the most exciting and rewarding events in the school calendar, held every two years for students in Years 5 and 6.
