RESC Staff Updated on OSH
As part of the ongoing professional development activities regularly undertaken at Riverside Education Support Centre, the majority of staff attended a very informative onsite session about implementation of Occupational Safety and Health in the school environment. Some staff from Riverside PS were also able to attend.
Principal Jim Douglas welcomed Mr John Rogerson, OSH Consultant – Employee Relations for the Department of Education, to the gathering. Mr Rogerson’s presentation covered updated practices, incident statistics, incident aversion techniques and more, delivered with wit and wisdom.
As in all workplaces, the line between over-protection and inadequate practice is sometimes thin, but staff learned of the need for preventative action, timely intervention, good follow-up procedure and evaluation – all components that enable our staff to participate in a safe workplace environment that offers the best possible learning environment and outcomes for our students.
Parents and carers, you are part of our community and therefore also an integral part of our OSH environment. Your observations may point to improvements that can be made to our environment to improve safety and will always be welcomed in writing to the registrar. A hand written note will suffice, dated and named.
The invitation extended to Mr Rogerson to address our staff is indicative of our commitment to a best practice work site, with obvious beneficial consequences for our students, and follows a DET-OSH visit to the school earlier this year where much good advice and recommendations were received and acted upon.
